6th Avenue Corridor Inc. (6AC), a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, is searching for a self-motivated leader to fill the position of Executive Director.  6AC facilitates the 6th Avenue Corridor Urban Neighborhood Main Street Program, which strives to revitalize the historic 6th Avenue corridor from Interstate 235 north to the Des Moines River just north of downtown Des Moines, IA.

The position of Executive Director is a full-time, paid position that reports directly to the 6AC Board of Directors.  The Executive Director works independently as the 6AC representative, providing leadership in developing and implementing policies and programs to carry out the work of the organization.  

The former Executive Director, Breann Bye, has accepted a position with the City of Des Moines. 

Mission Statement

The 6th Avenue Corridor Urban Neighborhood Main Street Program’s mission is to coordinate and facilitate the revitalization of historic 6th Avenue from Interstate 235 north to the Des Moines River.

The 6th Avenue Corridor is a vibrant, culturally, and historically rich area that attracts diverse residents, businesses and visitors.

Summary of Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administers the 6AC Main Street Program, working in collaboration with Main Street Iowa and Main Street America. Prepares and submits required reporting. Attends all workshops and conferences required to maintain Main Street designation. Supports the bi-annual accreditation process.
  • Reports to the Board of Directors, maintaining open communication and disclosure of the conditions, operations, and needs of the organization.
  • Oversees the daily administration of the organization by implementing policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Serves as the key spokesperson for the organization, raising awareness of the organization’s work.
  • In conjunction with the 6AC Treasurer, assists in preparing the annual budget.
  • Monitors the financial health of the organization and works in coordination with the Board of Directors to achieve financial sustainability.
  • Writes/implements operational and project grants.
  • Facilitates periodic audits and compliance activities as required from funders and associated organizations.
  • Supports and directs all marketing, social media, and public relations activities to build and maintain community and public relationships. 6AC website, Facebook page and all social media must be current and reflect the mission of 6AC.
  • Establishes agendas for 6AC meetings, communicating dates and times with Board and project members.
  • Executes other duties as requested and assigned by the Board of Directors.
  • Minimum travel is expected with this position, must have own reliable transportation, ability to canvass the 6th Avenue Corridor associated businesses and residents, as needed, desk work along with lifting up to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to establish and maintain thriving relationships with diverse stakeholders, including, but not limited to, Des Moines City Council Members, government departments and agencies within the City, County and State, community and neighborhood leaders, business owners, neighborhood residents, contractors and developers, and the general public.
  • Understanding of economic development and economic restructuring, small business and entrepreneurship.
  • Experience in grant writing and successful implementation of grant funds.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • An appreciation for the history of a place and its neighborhoods.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Secondary language skills are preferred, but not required.
  • College degree or history of successful work experience in one or more of, but not limited to, the following fields: non-profit management, community organizing, business development, public service, marketing, or urban/community planning.
