The 6th Avenue Corridor Urban Neighborhood Main Street Program seeks proposals for site-specific, temporary public art and urban “prototypes” that will enliven the 6th Avenue Corridor in Des Moines, Iowa. The 6th Avenue Corridor Urban Neighborhood Main Street Program encourages proposals for interactive, engaging, and unique installation art of all forms, including media-based works. Of particular interest are projects that connect people to the location, buildings, landscape, diverse community and/or history of the Corridor and those which might support/engage small business development and entrepreurialism. The 6th Avenue Corridor Urban Neighborhood Main Street Program welcomes muralists, visual artists, sculptors, sound artists, performing artists, photographers, design firms and others to submit a proposals. We welcome proposals from professional artists, emerging artists, youth, community groups/organizations—i.e. anyone who has a creative idea for how to enrich the 6th Avenue Corridor! Collaborations are welcome.

Eight project stipends will be awarded at the following levels:

Two (2) - $5,000 projects

Two (2) - $2,500 projects

Four (4) - $1,000 projects

Project stipends can support materials, technology and other components to create the concept. Applicants are welcome to identity and secure additional sources of funding necessary to support their concept and should specify the amount and sources in their application.

The installation of selected works must be complete by Saturday, October 20, 2018. This installation completion will coincide with a festival held that day on 6th Avenue in the two-block area between College Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. Artists will have the opportunity to engage with festival attendees and showcase their work. Applicants might consider how to engage with festival attendees in the final installation of the work that day, depending on the concept.

Proposals will be reviewed relative to the following criteria:
  • Site specificity: ability of the work to engage art audiences and the general public
  • Inclusivity: attempt to foster collaboration/engagement during artwork creation and connect with the diversity of the surrounding neighborhoods and area organizations
  • Quality of the proposal and any prior work
  • Fit for property owners
  • Feasibility of the proposal
  • Originality and timeliness
  • Safety of visitors and passersby
